Check out Assemblyman Mike Gatto’s new Wikispace that will allow citizens to participate in the legislative drafting process. In launching this new site, he released this statement:
Government has a responsibility to listen to the people and to enable everyone to be an active part of the legislative process. That’s why I’ve created this space for you to draft real legislation. Just like a Wikipedia entry, you can see what the current draft is, and propose minor or major edits. The marketplace of ideas will decide the final draft.
I’m glad Assemblyman Gatto recognizes the need to better connect the public to their policy-makers and I hope he pairs this new endeavor with efforts to reach out to those communities that are often left out of the decision-making process!
